WELCOME PLAYERs

You have been selected to participate in a series of games. Each of ​you have been equipped with a device that explains the rules of the ​game, the amount of players, the time limit, and the game's win ​condition. These devices also denote what your role in the story is. ​Every single one of you have been selected for a divine purpose, so ​please perform it well.


Upon successful completion of a game, you will be rewarded in the ​form of: items, currency, and most importantly, visas. The amount of ​days on your visa corresponds to the difficulty level of the game. ​If at any time your visa runs out, you will be terminated. If you ​forfeit a game, you will be terminated. If you do not meet the ​game's win condition in the allotted time, you will be terminated.

ABOUT:

The Fool’s Journey is a concept for a futuristic TTRPG (Table Top Role-Playing Game) Inspired by the show ‘Alice in Borderland’. ​In this game players are transported to a strange place known only as ‘The Echo Realm’. Players wake up with no recollection ​of who they are or how they came to be in this place but they are equipped with a phone that has assigned them a Tarot Card ​and a Visa that tells them how many days they have left in the Echo Realm. This phone will serve as their main lifeline and ​guide them through the story as they traverse the strange new world they find themselves in while forced to participate in ​games.


Before Players woke up in this world they would have each been a college student (or college-aged) young adult living in a mid-​sized US city known for hosting a number of universities.


Shortly before each character awoke in the Echo Realm they were approached by a mysterious group offering them something ​they desperately needed. Every character was so desperate it seemed the offer was impossible to turn down seeing as all ​offers were accepted. Yet when your characters wake up they have no memory of accepting this offer, what it was they so ​desperately needed, or what the terms of such an agreement were. The only thing they can remember about themselves is ​their name and vague information about their family and the fact that they once lived in a college town. Characters will have to ​remember who they are as they fight to survive the games.


The Fool’s Journey will be a very narrative-driven roleplay with a large focus ​on lore and character development.

While there is a strong action element to this roleplay in the life and death games character play, they will also spend a ​significant time outside of the games to explore the strange world they have found themselves in, learn about the people that ​live there, and get to know fellow players characters.

This roleplay will take place primarily within a Discord server. In-character posts will alternate between:

  • Death games that will be run like a turn-based d&d campaign (asynchronous) where players will roll dice ​to determine the outcome of their character’s actions
  • Downtime scenes that will be turn based posts exploring the world, the narrative, and character ​relationships.
  • It will be highly collaborative and players will be expected to regularly participate in OOC-chat to ​plan scenes and plot character interactions.
  • Characters in this roleplay are participating in death games and therefore are likely to die at any ​time. Players must be willing to accept their character may be killed off. If a character is killed ​players will be allowed to continue playing as a new character.

Application Process:

Step 1: Create a character

Please select a Major Arcana role and fill out an application as directed below.


Step 2: One shot campaign

All applicants will participate in a one-shot prologue event that will last 2-3 weeks. This one-shot will be a trial ​run to test your characters and see if everyone will be a good fit.


Step 3: Player selection

At the end of the one-shot event we will announce which applications have been approved. These players will ​continue on to the onboarding process and begin the first game in the echo-realm.

Once players have been selected to join the main roleplay there will be a robust onboarding process with a ​number of activities you will be expected to complete to introduce you to the story and help flesh out your ​character. Please be prepared to complete these if you apply for the one-shot.

Rules:

GENERAL

follow basic RP etiquette, be respectful, don't godmod or metagame. just generally be nice and try to get ​along. harassment of any kind will not be tolerated. this roleplay will explore mature themes, violence, and ​death. if you have any content sensitivity, please consider if any of these heavy topics will be harmful to you ​before applying.


DICE

disclaimer: we have never run a dnd campaign before so we will just be using a very simplified dice system ​where players have to roll to succeed in certain tasks. players do not have to have any experience with ​dice/dnd in order to apply. we will be taking characters’ backgrounds and hobbies into account when rolls are ​made (i.e. if your character is a professional gymnast they will have advantage on dexterity rolls etc). if your ​character's hp goes down to 0 they are unconscious, if they take additional damage they die. given the nature ​of the games and story, death is a very real possibility. if your character dies you will be given the option to ​make a new one.


POSTING

posts aren't required to be any specific length so long as they help drive the story forward in some way. ​character action responses can be as short as a paragraph or two. if you feel inspired by a scene and would ​like to write longer form posts, we will have a fics system in place where you can write longer fics of any kind ​(in response to the scene, flashbacks to past memories, etc.) for in-RP bonuses. the expectation however is ​that you are active enough to check the discord and respond to events several times a week. that being said, ​life happens and if something happens, please let the mods know. communication is key! consistent failure to ​post regularly or 1 week of radio silence will result in your character being moved to a hiatus status, and in a ​game, your character’s turn will be skipped. if you would like to come back please message a mod to work ​something out.


CHARACTERS

choose a tarot that is reflective of your character’s virtues and vices. you are welcome and encouraged to take ​a creative approach. characters need to be fleshed out with completed backstories, multiple goals and ​objectives, and a variety of flaws. this is not a first-come first-served roleplay; characters that feel ​underdeveloped or two-dimensional will not be accepted. characters will be in college and within the age range ​of 18 - 23. faceclaims should be an illustration of some kind; try to have character art that is high-quality. ​character art should match the character's age and description.


MEMORIES

at the beginning of the campaign, characters will start with memory loss. they'll have a sense of basic ​information about themselves (like their names and generally where they came from, the fact that they may ​have a sibling etc.), but specific memories regarding who their family is, what they were doing prior to entering ​the echo realm, and how they got there will be unknown. throughout the campaign, memories will be restored ​through flashbacks. when this happens, players will write a flashback scene of the specific memory as well as ​their character’s response to reliving it.

I - The Magician

upright:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjCharismatic, skilled, confident, and resourceful. A natural leader or influencer ​with the ability to manifest goals and bring ideas to life.


reversed:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjManipulative, deceptive, or lacking focus. A person who uses their talents ​for self-serving or unethical purposes or someone struggling to realize their potential.


II - The High Priestess

upright:

reversed:

III - The Empress

IV - The Emperor

upright:

reversed:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjControlling, rigid, or domineering. A person who may misuse their power, ​be inflexible, or struggle with authority, potentially leading to conflicts or power ​struggles.


V - The Hierophant

upright:

IX - The HERMIT

upright:

reversed:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjIsolated, withdrawn, or avoiding self-reflection. Someone who may be ​feeling lonely, cut off from others, or afraid to look inward.

XII - The HANGED MAN

upright:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjPatient, open-minded, reflective, and willing to sacrifice. A person who sees ​things from a different perspective and understands the value of surrender and waiting.

reversed:

XIIi - death

upright:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjTransformative, adaptable, and accepting of change. A person who ​understands the need for endings to create new beginnings and isn't afraid of ​transformation.


reversed:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjResistant to change, stuck, or afraid of letting go. Someone who clings to ​the past, avoids necessary endings, or fears transformation.


XvIi - the star

upright:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjOptimistic, idealistic, calm, and healing. A person who brings hope, ​inspiration, and serenity to others, often seen as a guiding light.


reversed:

jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjPessimistic, insecure, or feeling hopeless. Someone who struggles to find ​faith or optimism, feeling disconnected from their purpose.

XvIii - the moon

upright:
